Recently we saw Children in Need raise a staggering amount of money to help people across the UK and Africa and Disasters Emergency Committee (DEC) set up an appeal for the Philippines after the devastating typhoon Haiyan struck on 8th November, again raising huge sums. How many of us donated then? I know my heart strings were certainly tugged, when I saw the images shown on television.
There are over 180,000 registered charities in the UK alone, ranging from animal welfare to medical research, English heritage to hospitals, Armed Services to religious, and the list goes on. It is estimated nearly £9 billion was donated and split between these charities in 2012. Giving to a particular charity is a very personal and often emotive choice, but they rely on our donations, whether these are financial, by becoming a volunteer or donating food and goods.
A little closer to home, we at CBS have chosen to support Connect Reading’s Connect Well appeal. Launchpad Reading and CIRIC (Churches in Reading Drop-in Centre) will be distributing gifts of warm clothing and shoes, sleeping bags and food with a long shelf life to vulnerable adults in Reading and the surrounding areas.
