It’s said that you don’t get a second chance to make a good first impression.
As the National Security Institute (NSI) has been recognised as the leading certification body for the security and fire protection industries in the UK for over 40 years, it’s crucial that their reception area makes the right initial impact.
Today, NSI provides robust, high quality audits of home and business security and fire safety service providers. So commercial and residential property customers who choose NSI approved companies have the reassurance that their chosen contractors will work to the standards demanded by the Police, Fire and Rescue Services as well as the insurance industry.
When it came to their reception area, the NSI team were faced with three problems that needed creative, cost effective and practical solutions.
First and foremost, it didn’t reflect their contemporary brand image. So they wanted us to modernise the facility to create a more welcoming, professional, open and flexible space.
Then they needed to create extra room for employee and visitor meetings – a prime concern for any organisation with today’s expensive rental costs.
Finally, the client’s legacy reception area tended to be overwhelmed by large numbers of visitors during their day-to-day operations, particularly when workshops, seminars and training programmes were being hosted on-site.
To meet these differing demands, we helped to create an additional 60% of floor area in their reception, utilising space formerly given over to inadequate washrooms and toilets, and an obsolete post room and administration office.
We created a new purpose built wash and shower room facility away from the reception but still conveniently close to it. Our new reception design also included ‘right-sizing’ the space for reduced administration and post room functions, all in line with current building regulations.
Inspired by the NSI logo, our deep blue and diagonal clean line design is right on brand. It’s been used throughout the scheme, resulting in a vibrant, welcoming, consistent and practical reception. The main stairwell continues the theme and displays all NSI’s brand messaging, including the corporate values and mission.
We faced a trio of challenges in re-designing NSI’s reception.
We needed to completely take over the entire area, including the staircase and lobby, to work as quickly, effectively and efficiently as we could. That meant creating a temporary reception area.
Another demanding part of the project was the construction of the vestibule lobby and the subsequent knock through into the reception area. This while ensuring security was maintained at all times.
And most of our work was undertaken during office hours, around NSI’s people and visitors, such as during training sessions. So we had to strive at all times to ensure our work didn’t impact on our client’s work.
Our client’s reception area now reflects the kind of organisation it is – modern and dynamic with an impressive heritage.
It truly represents this highly regarded and prestigious professional body.
What’s more, the client’s refreshed reception combines form and function in a stylish and vibrant way for their people, visitors and all other users of the space.
